Human growth hormone, commonly called HGH, is a protein hormone involved in growth, tissue development and metabolic regulation. Recombinant human growth hormone, known as somatropin, consists of 191 amino acids and has the same amino-acid sequence as the predominant form of naturally occurring pituitary growth hormone.
Studied Uses
Somatropin formulations have been clinically studied in areas including:
- Growth-hormone deficiency in children
- Adult growth-hormone deficiency
- Growth failure associated with certain pediatric conditions
- Short stature associated with Turner syndrome, Noonan syndrome and being born small for gestational age without sufficient catch-up growth
- Body-composition and metabolic changes associated with growth-hormone deficiency
Certain specialized somatropin formulations have also been studied for conditions such as HIV-associated wasting and short-bowel syndrome.
How It Works
Somatropin binds to growth-hormone receptors on responsive cells and activates intracellular signalling pathways. It produces some biological effects directly and others through increased production of insulin-like growth factor 1, or IGF-1.
Growth-hormone and IGF-1 signalling are involved in skeletal growth, protein synthesis, tissue development and the regulation of carbohydrate and fat metabolism.
