Human growth hormone, commonly known as HGH, is a protein hormone involved in physical growth, tissue development and metabolic regulation. Recombinant human growth hormone, called somatropin, consists of 191 amino acids and has the same amino-acid sequence as the predominant form of growth hormone naturally produced by the human pituitary gland.
Studied Uses
Authorized somatropin formulations have been clinically studied for:
- Growth-hormone deficiency in children
- Adult growth-hormone deficiency
- Growth failure associated with certain pediatric conditions
- Short stature associated with Turner syndrome and Noonan syndrome
- Children born small for gestational age who do not experience sufficient catch-up growth
- Idiopathic short stature and certain other growth disorders
Some specialized somatropin formulations have also been studied for HIV-associated wasting and short-bowel syndrome.
How It Works
Somatropin binds to growth-hormone receptors on responsive cells, activating intracellular signalling and the production of growth-hormone-dependent proteins, including insulin-like growth factor 1, or IGF-1.
Growth hormone produces some effects directly and others through IGF-1. These pathways contribute to skeletal growth, protein synthesis, tissue development and the regulation of carbohydrate and fat metabolism.
