Tesamorelin is a synthetic 44-amino-acid analogue of human growth hormone-releasing hormone, also called GHRH or growth hormone-releasing factor. It has been investigated for its effects on pituitary growth-hormone signalling, IGF-1 production and body-fat distribution.
Studied Uses
Tesamorelin has been clinically studied for reducing excess visceral abdominal fat in adults with HIV-associated lipodystrophy. Randomized trials have examined its effects on:
- Visceral adipose tissue and abdominal-fat distribution
- Body composition and lean tissue
- Lipid and metabolic markers
- Liver-fat accumulation in people living with HIV
- Growth-hormone and IGF-1 activity
How It Works
Tesamorelin binds to growth hormone-releasing hormone receptors on somatotroph cells in the anterior pituitary gland. This stimulates the synthesis and pulsatile release of the body’s own growth hormone.
The resulting increase in growth hormone raises levels of insulin-like growth factor 1, or IGF-1, and IGF-binding protein 3. These signalling pathways influence fat metabolism, tissue growth and other metabolic processes.
