Tesamorelin is a synthetic analogue of human growth hormone-releasing hormone, also called GHRH or growth hormone-releasing factor. It has been studied for its effects on pituitary growth-hormone secretion, IGF-1 signalling and visceral abdominal fat.
Studied Uses
Tesamorelin has primarily been studied in clinical research involving:
- Excess visceral abdominal fat associated with HIV-related lipodystrophy
- Abdominal-fat distribution and body composition
- Growth-hormone and IGF-1 activity
- Liver-fat accumulation in people living with HIV
- Metabolic and lipid-related markers
Clinical trials evaluated tesamorelin in adults with HIV-associated lipodystrophy and excess abdominal fat. Additional research has examined its effects on visceral and liver fat. Approved tesamorelin formulations are not indicated for general weight-loss management.
How It Works
Tesamorelin binds to GHRH receptors on somatotroph cells in the anterior pituitary gland. This stimulates the production and pulsatile release of endogenous growth hormone.
The resulting increase in growth hormone raises circulating insulin-like growth factor 1, or IGF-1. These signalling pathways influence fat metabolism, tissue growth and other metabolic processes.
