KPV is a short peptide composed of three amino acids: lysine, proline and valine. It corresponds to the C-terminal portion of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone, or α-MSH, and has primarily been investigated for its anti-inflammatory and immune-signalling properties.

Studied Uses

KPV has been studied in laboratory and animal models involving intestinal inflammation, inflammatory signalling and colitis. Research has examined its effects on intestinal epithelial cells and immune cells, as well as targeted methods for delivering KPV to inflamed areas of the colon.

Additional laboratory research has investigated KPV and related α-MSH fragments for inflammatory processes affecting skin and other epithelial tissues. Early in-vitro studies have also examined antimicrobial activity against organisms including Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans.

How It Works

KPV appears to influence several inflammatory signalling pathways. In intestinal research models, the peptide can be transported into certain epithelial and immune cells by the peptide transporter PepT1. Its uptake has been associated with reduced activation of inflammatory pathways and lower expression of several inflammatory signalling molecules.

Research has also suggested that KPV may interfere with interleukin-1-related activity and other cellular inflammatory responses. Its precise mechanisms and potential applications remain subjects of ongoing investigation.
