PT-141, also known as bremelanotide, is a synthetic cyclic peptide composed of seven amino acids. It acts on melanocortin receptors within the central nervous system and has been studied for its effects on sexual-desire and arousal signalling.
Studied Uses
PT-141 has been investigated in clinical research involving:
- Acquired, generalized hypoactive sexual desire disorder in premenopausal women
- Sexual desire and arousal responses
- Female sexual dysfunction research
- Erectile-response signalling in men
- Central melanocortin-receptor activity
An authorized bremelanotide formulation is indicated for acquired, generalized hypoactive sexual desire disorder in certain premenopausal women.
How It Works
PT-141 activates several melanocortin-receptor subtypes. Activity at MC4R, which is found in multiple areas of the central nervous system, is considered relevant to its effects on sexual-desire signalling, although the complete mechanism remains uncertain.
PT-141 also activates MC1R on melanocytes. This pathway influences melanin production and explains why pigmentation changes have been observed with bremelanotide.
