Melanotan-2, also written as Melanotan II or MT-II, is a synthetic cyclic peptide composed of seven amino acids. It is an analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone, or α-MSH, and has been investigated for its effects on melanocortin receptors, skin pigmentation and sexual-response signalling.
Studied Uses
Melanotan-2 has been examined in early laboratory and human research involving:
- Melanin production and skin pigmentation
- Melanocortin-receptor activity
- Biological responses to ultraviolet exposure
- Sexual arousal and erectile-response signalling
- Development of related melanocortin-based compounds
An early Phase 1 study found that Melanotan-2 increased skin pigmentation in a small number of participants. Separate clinical research investigated its effects on erectile response and sexual desire.
How It Works
Melanotan-2 acts as an agonist at several melanocortin receptors.
Activation of the melanocortin-1 receptor, or MC1R, on melanocytes stimulates the production of melanin, particularly eumelanin, which contributes to darker skin pigmentation.
Its activity at melanocortin receptors involved in central nervous-system signalling has also been investigated in relation to sexual arousal and erectile responses. Because Melanotan-2 acts at multiple receptor subtypes, its activity is less selective than melanocortin compounds designed to target a narrower biological pathway.
